Today T-Mobile finally formally showed the world the much anticipated Sidekick II. To be available to consumers this Fall, the Sidekick II will get its first official public showing tonight at a Hollywood "VIP" party, so the company claims.
The new Sidekick has gone through a bit of Hollywood make over since the last release, the color Sidekick. The new device is 25% "slimmer" according to T-Mobile, but now weighs about 184g - a bit more than the old models. But that doesnt seem too bad when you consider that the Sidekick II has a new built-in VGA camera with flash, and a larger battery that can support up to about 4.5 hours of talk time. There is also a new speakerphone in the unit.
T-Mobile claims that the Sidekick II supports "Hi-Fi" ringers, which we take to mean polyphonics, since the device can supposedly play music clips. T-Mobile will be offering celebrity voice ringers, too. And since, presumably, the Sidekick II will be popular with business users and would-be Hollywood stars both, the handset can store up to 2,000 contacts.
Like the prior model, the new Sidekick II has a color screen and a full QWERTY keyboard. Yahoo Messaging support has been added to compliment the already present AOL Instant Messenger support. Of course the email client is nothing new, but one thing that is new, and one that relates more to the younger set than the suits, is the addition of user-changeable color "bumpers", the Sidekick IIs version of replaceable covers.
We look forward to a hands on test of the Sidekick 2 this Fall. Weve added
a few new high-res photos to the story since it was originally published. You
